Missions Update: Houston Welcomes Refugees

March 12, 2025

Did you know that Houston is one of the top resettlement cities in the United States? At WoodsEdge, we are honored to partner with local ministries that are making a profound impact both in our city and across the globe. One such partner is Houston Welcomes Refugees, whose mission is to help ease the resettlement process for refugees coming to Houston by mobilizing invested, caring volunteers, fostering hope amidst crisis. In 2024, Houston received nearly 5,500 refugees, and with God's grace and provision, Houston Welcomes Refugees was able to serve 1,681 of those refugees (30%) who are from 25 different nations around the world. 176 volunteers served on welcome teams, 713 new volunteers attended a community education orientation, and 4,504 Core Welcome Kits were distributed to refugee families.

In partnership with Houston Welcomes Refugees, our toddlers and children at KidsEdge Preschool are making a positive impact in the city of Houston. They have been learning about what it means to be a refugee and how they can help bring hope to these families as they settle into their new homes. They have been actively collecting items for Core Welcome Kits such as shampoo, soap bars, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. KidsEdge is truly making a difference in our community!

There is an opportunity coming this May for you to get involved in caring for refugees, too! To learn how you and your family can support refugees arriving in our city, please join us for a Houston Welcomes Refugees volunteer orientation on Saturday, May 31. If you have any questions, please contact Abimelec Albornoz at .

Leviticus 19:34 says, "The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God." Let's consider how we may be the hands and feet of Jesus and Bring Hope to the vulnerable refugees coming to our city.
